The Parish Protect Initiative

The Parish Protect Initiative was established to serve the Church as a professional stewardship, operating on a strictly non-profit basis. We recognise that many parishes and Oratories operate under significant financial constraints, yet the necessity of maintaining a secure and dignified environment for the celebration of the Sacraments has never been more pressing. It is our firm conviction that the standard of protection afforded to a parish should not be contingent upon its temporal wealth. Our role is to ensure that the physical integrity of the church is maintained and that the congregation may gather in safety, free from the threat of disruption or criminal activity.

We understand that the Church today faces a complex landscape of criminal and anti-social challenges. While some of these, such as general theft or property damage are shared by the nation at large, others are unique to the life of the Parish. We are acutely aware of the specific sensitivities surrounding the protection of the Sanctuary, the risk of sacrilege and the delicate task of managing individuals who may seek to exploit the welcoming nature of a church.

Our initiative is built upon this understanding. We recognise that a church is a sanctuary that must remain accessible for prayer and the life of the faithful, whilst remaining robustly protected against those who would cause harm or disruption.

Dedicated Stewardship

The cornerstone of this initiative is the deployment of security operatives who act as dedicated stewards of the church estate. Unlike standard commercial guarding, our personnel undergo specialist training to ensure they are well-versed in the traditions of the Church and the specific requirements of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. They understand the necessity of silence, the importance of timing during the Liturgy and the requirement for a diligent but understated presence.

Our operatives are distinguished by a bespoke, traditional uniform. This attire has been specifically commissioned to reflect the professional and solemn nature of the role, providing a visible deterrent while remaining entirely appropriate for the interior of a church or Oratory. Whether providing an honour guard during the veneration of sacred relics, overseeing the security of the offertory during the great feasts or maintaining a watchful eye over the parish car park during evening services, our staff conduct themselves with the utmost decorum.

Statutory Compliance

In an increasingly complex regulatory landscape, the initiative provides a comprehensive framework for security management and statutory compliance. We offer formal security consulting, providing Parish Priests and administrators with professional risk assessments tailored to the unique architecture and usage of ecclesiastical buildings.

These assessments are of particular importance in light of Martyn’s Law. We assist parishes in understanding their obligations under this legislation, ensuring that the required preparedness and security protocols are implemented effectively without compromising the accessibility of the parish. By identifying potential vulnerabilities and offering tailored solutions, we provide the resources necessary to assist in the long-term security planning of the church.

Integrated Intelligence

To ensure a cohesive approach to security, the initiative is supported by our proprietary digital framework. Parishes requiring closer integration may be granted access to our secure portal, allowing for the direct submission of incident and intelligence reports. This system ensures our teams are updated in real-time, providing a unified response to emerging concerns within the parish and Diocese.

Through this portal, authorised parish staff may also access subject galleries concerning individuals of interest or those currently excluded from church property. We recognise the sensitivity of such information, as such, all data within this framework is managed with the highest level of confidentiality and strictly in accordance with current data protection laws, ensuring that the legal standing of the parish is always maintained.

Vigilance & Response

To alleviate the practical burden of estate management, we provide a professional key-holding and alarm response service. By entrusting these responsibilities to our team, we ensure that out-of-hours activations are managed by trained professionals, rather than requiring the immediate intervention of the Parish Priest. This service, alongside our capacity for remote CCTV monitoring, provides continuous protection for the parish property, ensuring that any incident is met with a swift response while allowing the Clergy to remain focused upon their pastoral and sacramental duties.

At present, the Parish Protect Initiative is available to parishes, Oratories and ecclesiastical buildings within the Archdiocese of Birmingham and the Diocese of Nottingham. We welcome enquiries from Parish Priests and Diocesan staff who wish to discuss how we may assist in the safeguarding of their parishioners and the parish estate.
